New land - Cox Mead
We’ve are very happy to reveal that we have taken on a bit more land. It’s not huge, but its a really valuable addition to our site at Clark Fields. The new land, which is called Cox Mead, is a 12-acre extension along the banks of the Old Rhyne near the village of Street, and it effectively acts as an extension of our existing site.
As well as being great in its own right the new land gives us ownership of both banks of the rhyne for about 500 metres, meaning we are now able to begin exploring options for allowing this water way to develop a bit more naturally in the future. At the moment it has very steep, straightened sides, and this is something we want to look at changing.
Unlike some of our other sites we have not purchased this land directly. Instead it was bought by a donor and is then being leased to Somerset Wildlands. If it works well it could be another useful way for us to rewild the Somerset Levels.
We’ll be keeping a close eye on the site over the coming years, but already we’ve spotted some water voles holes in the bank and stonechats and reed warblers in the ditches.
You can see the location of the new land on the image of the google map below, in yellow.
